The technique of "Keyword Targeting" is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient way to make money at home online and to achieve SEO optimization. This method of internet marketing is sometimes also referred to as "Keyword Sniping" - and it is widely misunderstood by most people. Keyword targeting involves using keyword phrases of three or more words - called "long tail keywords" - to target the subject matter of the product being sold. Yet long tail keywords are also misunderstood by many people. The term "long tail" does not simply refer to the fact that the keyword phrases are long. The term comes from a graph of search volume versus phrase popularity. Picture a simple graph. On the verticle scale is "search volume" from low to high. On the horizontal scale is "phrase popularity" from high to low. The most basic and popular keyword phrases of one and two words would have very high popularity and very high search volume (and VERY HIGH competition). The longer, narrower keyword phrases, on the other hand, would have much lower popularity and search volume (and also much lower competition). Let's take an example. The term "weight loss" is basic, extremely popular and nearly impossible to rank for on Google. That's because it has 347 million competitors. As you lengthen the phrase - for example: "weight loss after pregnancy", you find that as of this date there are only 43,600 competitors. If you go even further: "weight loss programs after pregnancy", you find only 8 competitors. If you were to place this trend on our imaginary graph, you would find that the broad, popular one or two word phrases would be at the very top. You would then see a very steep "suicide ski jump" type curved slope come down as the keyword phrases become narrower and more focused. It's the position of these narrow, specific phrases on the "long tail" of our imaginary graph that gives them their name. They are essential to making money quick on the Internet, because they are very numerous, and they each have very small competition. Of course, they each have far less search volume. But taken together, you can accumulate fairly decent search volume if you have enough of them together in your article marketing campaign. More importantly, you stand a fair chance of ranking on the first page of Google with some of them because the competition is so low. So far, this has all been theoretical. The question is - does any of it really work? You will find that intuition and instinct, as well as experience will all be factors. But this is where most people misunderstand how to target. You see, you have to do more than just compare competition to search volume. You must also consider the nature of the competition among your top ten competitors for that phrase. Why? Because unless your phrase appears on the first page of Google, you won't get ANY traffic. For example, if each of your top ten competitors has numerous high quality backlinks from credible sites, and they each have a Google PR of 4 or better, you will have problems appearing on the first page of results for that phrase. Some who are experienced in "keyword sniping" will be able to pick out these phrases. They will have a good trade off of competition versus search volume, but they will also be able to compete in the top ten slots. How? I'll discuss the parameters they look for and the tools they use in a future article. About the Author: Learn more about KEYWORD SNIPING.
